The AEL providers work directly with employers to create a customized workplace literacy training program. One example of this is the longstanding educational partnership, between the Harris County Department of Education HCDE and Marek Brothers Construction who collaborated to develop a successful literacy program. Students practiced their English language skills on the job where they matter most.

For the class materials, instructors used Marek Brothers' documents and forms to help build reading comprehension, English language literacy, and writing skills. What could a host employer do? A significant challenge for WELL is the stigma associated with lower levels of literacy. At times individuals may not be aware they need assistance with their LLN skills or refuse training and support out of embarrassment.

As WELL training is voluntary, employers often promote the training as general workplace training rather than targeted LLN support to attract workers to the training. Employers must be willing to invest in training their workforce, be aware of LLN issues and have an understanding of the impact of these on productivity and performance before WELL training becomes a consideration. Large employers are often better equipped in this regard due to the financial commitment of the programme than small to medium enterprises.

The Skills Connect service is expected to assist the programme in reaching small to medium enterprises, a cohort whose time and financial constraints has seen them not engage with foundation skills training. A programme evaluation conducted in highlighted challenges in the areas of IT, governance and administration of the programme.

Solutions to these issues have been delivered through a review to streamline the programme guidelines; revising processes for programme administration, reinforcing performance measures and the introduction of a new IT system to monitor and report on these aspects. To achieve this, an understanding of the organisation's specific training needs and workforce profile is required, as well as a strong partnership between the employer and the training provider.

Overall, WELL training projects support employer training needs. Both employers and employees believe WELL training projects equip participants with vocational and LLN skills, increasing their employability, and improves learners social and personal skills.

Workplace English Language and Literacy WELL Programme Introduced by the Australian Government in , the programme provides grant funding to support integration of language, literacy and numeracy LLN education within vocational training, delivered in the workplace. Programme Implementation Funding The funding is available on a competitive grants basis to organisations in all industries and is designed to support employers to cultivate a culture of training in their workplaces.

There are eight language proficiency levels in the WPLN series starting from pre-beginning Level 1 through proficient use of the language Level 8. Before applying for WPLN training, you will have to go through an assessment to be placed into the right training level. There is also a compulsory Core Grammar and Vocabulary component for the literacy assessment.

Individuals will take the Core Grammar and Vocabulary component only once per test package, regardless of the number of literacy skills in the package. The WPLN assessments are computer-based. This is not applicable for individuals who attempt the same component within the three months lockout period.

Individuals who have not gone through or complete the WPLN training programme after pre-training assessment have to observe a three-month 90 days lockout period between assessments.
