The standby server at the central site might also be an active DHCP server for a subnet at the central site, or its only function can be as a standby server for the sites Client leases for all four sites can be viewed on the central DHCP server, even if it is not actively providing these leases. The load balance mode of operation is best suited to deployments where both servers in a failover relationship are located at the same physical site.

Both servers respond to DHCP client requests based on the load distribution ratio configured by the administrator. Load balancing can be used with a single subnet, or multiple subnets. See the following examples.

As previously noted, a load balance design also provides redundancy. If one of the servers in the previous examples becomes unavailable, the other DHCP server will assume responsibility for client leases. For DHCP failover to function correctly, time must be kept synchronized between the two servers in a failover relationship.

Time synchronization can be maintained by deployment of the Network Time Protocol NTP or any other alternative mechanism. When the failover configuration wizard is run, it will compare the current time on the servers being configured for failover.

If the time difference between the servers is greater than one minute, the failover setup process will halt with a critical error and request that time on the servers be synchronized. Each failover protocol message includes a time field that is populated with the Coordinated Universal Time UTC when the source server transmitted the message. For each message, the receiving server will perform a check of the time difference between the time stamp field in the packet and the time at the receiving server.

If this time difference is found to be greater than one minute, the receiving server will log a critical event indicating that the two servers are not time synchronized. Privacy policy. Before you configure the DHCP service, you must install it on the server. You can install DHCP during the initial installation of Windows Server , or after the initial installation is completed.

After you have installed the DHCP service and started it, you must create a scope. In the menu, click More , and then click Run as administrator. If prompted, type the credentials for an account that has Administrator privileges on the computer. If the user account with which you are logged on to the computer is an Administrator level account, you will not receive a credential prompt.

You must also replace interface names and IP addresses in this example with the values that you want to use to configure your computer. If you are installing your DHCP server in an Active Directory domain environment, you must join the computer to the domain. Open Windows PowerShell with Administrator privileges, and then run the following command after replacing the domain NetBios name CORP with a value that is appropriate for your environment.

When prompted, type the credentials for a domain user account that has permission to join a computer to the domain. After you have completed post-installation tasks, such as creating security groups and authorizing the DHCP server in Active Directory, Server Manager might still display an alert in the user interface stating that post-installation steps must be completed by using the DHCP Post Installation Configuration wizard.

You can prevent this now-unnecessary and inaccurate message from appearing in Server Manager by configuring the following registry key using this Windows PowerShell command.

This is a server level setting, not a scope level setting, so it will affect all scopes that you configure on the server. You can use the following command to configure the credentials that the DHCP server uses to register or unregister client records on a DNS server.

This example saves a credential on a DHCP server. The command prompts you for user name and password, so ensure that you provide credentials for an account that has permission to update resource records on your DNS server.

If you have a second subnet that is connected to the first subnet with a router where DHCP forwarding is enabled, you can use the following commands to add a second scope, named Corpnet2 for this example.

This example also configures an exclusion range and the IP address for the default gateway the router IP address on the subnet of the Corpnet2 subnet. If you have additional subnets that are serviced by this DHCP server, you can repeat these commands, using different values for all of the command parameters, to add scopes for each subnet.

See your router documentation for information on how to configure DHCP forwarding. After you connect the Ethernet cable to the network adapter and power on the computer, it will request an IP address from your DHCP server. The topic lists commands in alphabetical order based on the verb at the beginning of the commands, such as Get or Set.
