A few years back, Tomtom announced that they would no longer be certain models they had produced previously. This was contrary to their lifetime update guarantee, which they later clarified applied only to the useful life of the GPS.
The reason cited for this transition was that older devices lacked sufficient storage space to process the additional information required to provide up-to-date and increasingly accurate navigation. To upgrade the quality of their GPS systems and develop a more comprehensive mapping system, this move was deemed necessary by the company.
Naturally, this announcement incited fury amongst users who were using models that were suddenly deemed incompatible. However, newer models with sufficient storage space can be frequently updated to match the navigation quality of new releases. If you are considering buying a Tomtom to help smoothen your navigation on the road, make sure to purchase a model that supports the updates regularly available on their app.
The Tomtom navigation device is an incredibly useful navigation tool to have in your vehicle. Its up-to-date and constantly improving mapping systems guarantee users a consistent and high-quality experience. You can easily update your TomTom maps for free through their app and gain access to an improved network of navigation.
This ever-evolving device has its place in navigation and is still used vastly by millions across the world.
So if you travel often and need a navigation tool guaranteed to get you to your destination quickly, this is the one for you. There are regular new updates to make the TomTom as efficient as possible, and with a few short steps, you can update your TomTom map for free.
Specifically intended for vehicles of a larger size, it will provide you with customizable routes that are suitable for caravans and campervans. The built-in wifi means that you can access all of the latest updates on the go and it will also guide you on your journey via the latest maps.
This wifi also allows the system to update without needing to be connected to an alternative device. The detailed POI are specifically created for caravans and campervans and inform you of any campsites that can be found on the route. This sat nav can connect to your mobile phone so you can receive messages, make hands free calls and it is also compatible with SIRI and Google now so you can use voice control. If you install the tomtom software on your computer and plug in the tomtom, it should just update them, I think?
I have tomtom one 3rd edition, and every time I plug it into the PC it checks to make sure everything's up to date. And tries to sell me speed camera maps too, of course. I was going to check everything now with the TomTom software on my computer because I haven't for a while So it will be a few days before I get it lol.
But from memory I think all it did was update the software on the TomTom device not the actual maps otherwise I wouldn't still have the original version it was sold with because I have checked for updates in the past though not recently.
Maybe for your version or when you bought yours, you got a subscription to the map updates or something? I don't think mine has anything like that unfortunately! Ah, it's entirely possible I got a free year's subscription or something. Still worth plugging it in - might be cheaper that going through the website? Someone posted a link to some free satnav software on here a while ago; i think it had different versions for various phones and satnavs.
Try searching the forum, it shouldn't be too hard to find. If you have any of these lying around from other devices digital cameras, PS3 controller charging then they will work fine. I will give it a go when my new cable comes to double check it won't update the maps, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. No, I didn't have another cable that would fit it so I had to buy another one but I got one for about so it's not broke the bank! I did try searching the forum as well before I posted but I couldn't see anything.
I will keep on looking though because loads of things come up so maybe I've missed it! Not having much luck over this lol. Thanks anyway. Oh hummmmm The only totally free things you get from TomTom are updates to the software, GPSFix which is a simple predictor file that lets the unit latch on to satellites more quickly and MapShare.
It is NOT a free map upgrade. When you buy a TomTom you get one free map upgrade to bring your installed map up to the latest version.
Unfortunately if you leave it too long to use it or already have the latest version then it won't work. After that every single map you install has to be paid for. And about the only source of maps is TomTom.
I have seen websites eBay for example offer maps on SD card but I have my doubts about those. Basically TomTom and all the sat nav companies guard their map data very closely. So you are very unlikely to find genuine, fully up to date maps anywhere other than the manufacturers websites.
TomTom maps are also locked to the device they are installed on so cannot be transferred between units. So no 'borrowing' a mates device to copy maps. They simply won't work! The company is making serious efforts to improve the functions better than ever before. The team is also continuously putting in hard work for giving the most updated versions of software and devices for public use. As a navigation assistant for personal use, TomTom provides a device which gives an oblique view and an overhead view of the road.
The software uses a GPS receiver to precisely define the location and also helps by giving visual or audio directions telling how to reach at the desired destination. Some TomTom products can also be connected to the mobile phones via the Bluetooth. Some can even take calls and can read aloud the texts regarding the directions. It has a touch screen, speaker, USB port, internal Lithium-ion battery.
Most models have Bluetooth transceivers that allow connection to a smartphone. This allows it to make and receive calls. In the year , TomTom in association with Nike, released its first fitness watch and after that the company has itself released several watches TomTom Runner, Multi-sport, Spark. It also caters the use of these watches for the golf players. The watches have GPS sensors fed that helps monitor the green and red regions for a golf player.
Some of them are enabled to incorporate around songs to help boost the energy while workouts. The version Spark has the function to stream the audios on the wireless headset via the Bluetooth. Owning a TomTom in itself means that you further need not worry about the directions. No more the worry of waiting at fuel stations and asking for the correct way. Therefore, the list of advantages which TomTom offers-.
But along with the endless advantage, the only thing where it limits its usability is that the device is used only when needed, ie for navigation. Other than that, it has no purpose for the user. Therefore, for much easier routes the same purpose can be solved by a smart phone.
It is only when difficult routes are to be traveled in long-distance commuting that this device can turn out to be a boon. It is common that roads are prone to dynamic changes throughout the year.
